I hate not being able to do everything we normally do. I hate wearing masks. 2020 has been like a hard kick in the......

However, please do me a favour. This is actually not just for me, it is for you, and for everyone in our community.

We are going through the worst mental health crisis our country has faced in recent memory. Substance use is up, abuse is up, overdoses are up, people are struggling. The level of brokenness and dysfunction in so many people's lives is at an all time high.

So here is what I am asking. Stop! Please think about what you are posting. Do not add to the pain, the anxiety, the despair, the hopelessness. Just stop. Stop sending me, emails, facebook posts, stories about everything wrong with the world. Stop sending them to everyone.

It is not that I don't respect your opinion, or your right to have one. Just right now it would be great if we could give a little hope and stop letting our voices add to the distress of others.

Christmas is coming soon. So I am going to choose to do something new. This month I am going to filter all my social media posts through the lens of joy, peace, hope, and love. If what I say does not give people one of these things, I am choosing not to say it.

I am asking my friends to do the same.

When the Village is Broken I have spent the day r When the Village is Broken

I have spent the day reading and mourning more terrible news coming out of my community. I know our community is incredibly upset, and rightly so. Things like this do not make sense. There is a lot of people who are venting, blaming, yelling, and I understand those feelings. Wrong has been done so we want, and need, justice.

As sad as it is to admit, today’s incident does not surprise me at all. In the past few months I have been overwhelmed with the absolute brokenness that an increasing amount of our children, youth, and families are going through.

First, I want to say when a child / youth does something wrong it is not always the parent’s fault. Kids from bad homes and from great homes are capable to making wrong choices. Children / Youth from great homes though have an advantage in that once they make a wrong choice they will also have accountability and correction. So my starting point is not to blame the parents, as none of us know each person’s story.

We know it take a village to raise a healthy child. However, I think we have to look at the possibility that our village is broken. Here’s a few things I think we need to consider and some proactive things we can do.

This has not been an easy year. This in no way condones bad behaviour, but the following are real issues. Youth stress levels and anxiety are at an all time high. Many young people have not developed the skills to deal with what is taking place in their lives, homes, and family situations.

Cape Breton already had the worst child poverty rates and things have become worse. We live in a community where almost 40% of youth did not have the basics of life and that number is definitely higher now. That means they may be hungry, do not have access to programs which would put them around mentors, and are at a disadvantage in other ways. It also means they are living in homes where family financial stress is high.

However, here is something I have not heard many talk about but I believe is true of our community. In 2006 Glace Bay became known for something none of us wanted to be known for, Cottonland. Our community, like many around the CBRM, was hit by some
